A successful course description should (1) be targeted at students; (2) begin with the purpose or rationale for the course (i.e. Why is this course important?); (3) describe the key topics or content areas that will be covered; (4) describe any innovative activities or experiences that students will use to meet the goals of the course; (5) be concise; and (6) use gender-neutral language, simple language and sentence structure, and active voice.
- Do not copy special characters from Word to include an apostrophe. The coding does not translate to other technologies.
- Do not use dashes.
Course descriptions should not include references to a specific technology that may become outdated or begin with variations of “In this class…”
Example - Explores theory and practice of communicating on the job. Instruction addresses written, visual, and oral technical communication. Assignments involve practical, collaborative, and technologically informed learning modeled upon the realities of the workplace.
